the last supper

Have you ever looked at a painting and wondered what it meant? If yes then you are an art lover and this is certainly for you, if no then this article contains sexual content. Did I get your attention yet?

well, this painting bellow “the last supper” is more than just what you see: a bunch of guys eating,it’s among the greatest masterpieces made by Leonardo da Vinci ,not only it was made by delicate material (tempera and oil on plaster), but also it changed the world of art for good, especially the Cristian art.

Leonardo da Vinci, last supper, 1495-98 (Santa Maria Della grazie, Milan)

This frisk is a replay of the scene that happened in Jerusalem, from the last days of Jesus Christ, precisely the dramatic moment after he declared that one of the 12 apostles would betray him, as described in the Gospel of John 13:21. This painting is supposed to be a roller coaster of feelings, where you can see anger, sadness, suspicion, shock…..

Adding to that, the frisk was sending significant hints, actually, if we look at st Peter we’ll see him holding a knife while whispering in john’s ear, which has been interpreted as him getting prepared to face the danger and warning st john. As for Judas, he was holding the bag of money to hint that he was entrusted with the group’s money. Later, the grouping of Peter, Judas and John had key roles in the Passion of Christ (Jesus Christ's arrest, trial and suffering then execution): Judas would betray Jesus, Peter would deny Him (3 times the last one was at his trial), and John would stay faithful by remaining at the cross when Jesus was crucified. it’s a real tragedy!

However, is this all? Well, I don’t think so, every masterpiece has a hidden secret. In fact, it’s really obvious that not only Leonardo wanted to picture the moment, but also to turn against certain traditions and believes: he did not draw halos around the saints' heads like he’s supposed to which means that he sees them all including Jesus as normal people, they’re all mortal. Furthermore, others such as Dan Brown claimed that da Vinci didn’t drew john like it’s indicated in the picture above instead it was a female called marry Magdalene (the wife of Jesus and the mother of his daughter). He meant to reveal the truth that the Catholic Church has suppressed about Mary Magdalene and the Jesus bloodline for 2000 years, principally because “they fear the power of the sacred feminine in and of itself and because this would challenge the primacy of Saint Peter as an apostle.”

The last supper painting was indeed a living proof that art can be a controversial matter with lots of theories and interpretations.

PS: To know more about this theory I recommend you to read the “da Vinci code” book.
