BOOK REVIEW : FIGHT LIKE A GIRL

Welcome bookholics,

I hope you're as thrilled as i am to dive into the book i have in my hands today. As you know from the title i am reviewing the inspiring unapologetic, feminist manifesto, like its author clementine ford describes: Fight like a girl. It was published in 2016 and it has 14 interesting chapters.

When i first delved into the realms of feminism, this book was on top of the recommendations. And i can see why, now that i finished it. It covers all the basics in a persuasive and informative way. Even though i was familiar with plenty of the aspects of the case, fight like a girl was so eye-opening and thought-provoking. I learned and unlearned a lot thanks to Ford's frank words.

Clementine covered several topics that all women strongly relate to such as body image, male approval, birth control and mental health. She also talked fearlessly about harassment, rape, consent and sex. I admired the transparency and boldness of Clementine's ideas. She has an amazing storytelling ability. The parts where the author got personal and shared her experiences, stayed with me longer after i put the book down. Especially chapter 6 titled “are you my mother” where she speaks openly about abortions. To be honest, it was a roller coaster of emotions for me. Some chapters like “Man-hater” & “real girls” empowered me, other parts made me really angry and somehow wishing that reality was less sad and frustrating. The book is also filled with examples ,critics and quotations from great books.

Here's a quote that literally gives me chills every time i read: “feminists don’t need the approval of men to justify our existence. Whatever backlash they send our way will be met with resistance ten times harder, smarter and more determined. We’ll never give up fighting for all women to be treated with dignity and liberated from patriarchal oppression. Even the ones who don’t believe it exists. “

I must confess that i cried while reading the last chapter of the book. She spoke pure facts about the situation of women nowadays.

As you probably know by now, i loved the book. Yet i faced a little issue during this journey. Overall, the book was page-turner. However, some parts were hard to read. You know the truth can be painful and hard to process sometimes.

And i'm referring to it as a journey because my reading was on and off, sometimes i would feel sad that i have to drop the book and do some life chore , other days i can't stand reading a page .This might be a personal preference too , actually i am a slow and moody reader, i want to enjoy every word and taste every feeling the writer tries to transfer to us through paper.

To sum up, i highly recommend this piece of art. If i shall give it a rating out of 5, it would be 4

It made me happy, empowered and sometimes even angry . But above all, it pushed me to try to fight harder and to speak louder. So my friend, let's cross our fingers and hope for a better world where everyone is worthy despite their gender, sexuality, race or color of skin.
